By definition, Insomnia is Habitual sleeplessness (n.) – Concise Oxford Dictionary. While according to Encarta, Insomnia is a condition in which a person has difficulty having sufficient sleep, could be caused by either physical or psychological factor, but according to experts, approximately ¾ cases are caused by psychological factors.
Me, for example, has found it hard to have sufficient sleep (6 hours?) every night. Most of time I only sleep for about 4 hours, except on holidays. Is it Insomnia? Perhaps it is, because it fits the definition, I have a habit to not sleep. But if I remember it right, it is not like this at the very beginning. During college time we were force to reduce our sleeping duration by doing assignment sometimes, but I were forced to reduced my sleeping duration mostly to do my social life, hanging out, having discussion or just playing cards with friends. It seemed to be a good thing to do (having social life), and we have to do it at night since we are all busy persons during the day :D. In this period, I haven’t have insomnia, yet, I was having a long term sleeping disorder.
But now, after college, another reason came up, works. I accepted so many fast tracked projects that forced me to, again, reduced my sleeping duration. And slowly, it became a habit, so, my Insomnia went through a long term process, it is caused by both physical and psychological factor then.
Even though nobody really knows the exact function of sleeping, to me it is likely to gain a psychological condition, well rested, and by habit, some human could gain that condition faster than others. But that condition could be reached not only by sleeping, so in other words, why do we need to sleep? Because, if we don’t really need them, I have been wasting 1/3 of my life :(.
